How many of us have visions, dreams or goals of what we want to do be and have in the future?
Lots of us do.
The more important question today is how many of us have the ability and techniques to hold our vision in the face of challenges?
Less of us in my experience. That is why I see so many Ah -ha moments in peoples faces and hear such inspiring goals when I share this at in house training and personal development sessions in organisations up and down Australia.
Take your mind back to 6 years ago this month when a Gold Coaster sailed into Sydney harbour as the youngest person to sail solo and unassisted around the world aged 16.
Remember Jessica Watson.
Remember the fantastic crowds of thousands that turned out, how the all the media wanted to interview her, she was the focus of the nation, the darling of the media.
Everyone was so positive about her. It was a fantastic achievement. People wanted to know how she had achieved this.
How did she do it?
The important question to focus on is WHY she did it not HOW initially.
Because she had a vision, which she could see with her eyes closed that was so vivid, powerful and exciting that it empowered her to overcome all the challenges, setbacks and negative comments that she experienced.
You may already know that at age 7 she stuck on her wall at foot of her bed a drawing she did of her in a small boat sailing around the world. She went to sleep every night and that image was the last thing she saw as she drifted off into a deep sleep.
Imagine what a powerful reinforcing message of her vision that sends to your imaginative, creative right side of your brain.
Do you have an image of your vision in your bedroom? Do you have an image of it anywhere? Is it a vision or just a dream?
Challenges and Set backs:
Remember when she was in a collision in her few days with a bulk cargo ship and lost her mast.
Everyone was calling for her parents to ban her from going.
Can you imagine how challenging the negative language and feedback from the world media and sponsors must have been for Jessica.
Did she listen to the barrage of negative comments coming from around the world?
NO she held the vision, learned from the incident and moved on.
She was so inspired by her vision that NOTHING was going to stop her.
Jessica said that in her imagination she could clearly see herself sailing through the heads into Sydney Harbour returning from a successful round the world navigation and receiving a big cuddle from her parents.
What a powerful emotional connection to her goal or vision that was.
Think of us and our goals and visions, how often have we let them fade away to wishes and one day I will… thoughts after the first hurdle or challenge.
Her vision not only inspired her but inspired others to assist her. Her story inspired her generation to believe anything is possible – as it is!
If your vision is strong enough you will attract others who will want to help you achieve it:
She was challenged by lack of funding, yet her belief and determination inspired people and companies to support her. Sir Richard Branson was inspired to privately offer a support vessel to follow her if any assistance was needed.
He also offered to narrate her story in the documentary she recorded before during and after the trip. The fact that she recorded this documentary showed how much she believed that she would achieve this vision of hers.
The point of this story is to reinforce the power of having a vision, one that you can see feel, hear, smell and taste when you close your eyes.
A vision that is so strong that like Mohammed Ali’s phrase it becomes a Future History. Its in the future but because you have seen it in your imagination so often its like something certain that’s already happened Click here to read more about creating a Future History.
This month as the uncertainty that a federal election here in Australia generates I believe it is more vital than ever to have access to Mindstore’s training on creating your powerful Future History vision as well as access to tips to deal with changes, challenges and obstacles you might face in the coming weeks and months.
