Do you set long term goals?
Did you listen to any of the interviews of gold medal winners at the recent Commonwealth Games here on the Gold Coast.
If you had you would have heard phrases like :
“I have always dreamt of this moment”
” I have imagined holding this medal since I was a child”
” you just have to keep believing that you can win and never give up”
We hear this and might miss the clues to extraordinary people like these gold medal winning athletes success.
Extraordinary people set and achieve long term goals.
Like the story from the current rugby World Cup champions the All Blacks.
At the end of their 2011 World Cup win they set the ultimate challenge of being the first team to win back to back world cups.
As you know, four years is a very long time in the sporting world, yet the All Blacks set this inspirational goal early and relentlessly focused on it. The Bledisloe Cup and Grand Slam Tours became stepping stones or mini goals on the path towards their long-term Goal.
If 15 engaged individuals from a small country of 4.8 million people can win back to back World Cup’s, then we would do well to duplicate some of their thinking and positive attitude in our lives and business. Imagine what you could achieve?
In my life and business I set clear long-term goals. My weekly, monthly and quarterly plans all focus on those long-term goals, because I believe if that strategy is good enough for Commonwealth Games Gold medal winners and the All Blacks, it’s good enough for me!
By the way, many of these athletes will already be visualising standing on the same top podium at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022! Whilst many of us struggle to imagine something positive and inspiring this side of Christmas 2018!
May be its time to learn from them and take away some of these tips below to use?
